For many Labor Day signals the end of the summer, but those of us who live in Monmouth & Ocean Counties in New Jersey, it's a reason to celebrate because the Bennys are going home!
A Benny, for those of you who do not know, is a tourist, but not just any tourist. A Benny is usually from New York City and its surrounding areas (which includes parts of Northeastern New Jersey). However, being a tourist form this area is not THE definition of a Benny. We are happy to share the shore with those from this and all areas across the globe and fully recognize the boost to our local economy. The defining characteristic of a Benny is his/her blatant disregard and disrespect for the people who call the Shore their home year-round. And, for that matter, an utter lack of reverence for the shore (land and ocean) itself.

With the advent of Memorial Day comes the swell of New York plates on our roads. This means more traffic and, frankly, more accidents as New Yorkers are notoriously bad drivers. This is not just the statement of a grudge-filled "local" (if I may refer to myself as such with regards to this subject matter), it is a quantified fact determined by the DMV. See "New Yorkers rate as worst drivers"; an article from CNN.

They are rude beyond measure to the local service industry staff...well, just rude in general. They are pompous, arrogant, and oh so certain that they are the center of the universe and we should be welcoming them with flowers and parades. The night life suffers tremendously as well as they fill the bars and clubs of which we're amazed they can fit their ginormous heads into. They take beer bottles from the bars (against code) and walk the beach at night only to leave them behind in the sand. They throw cigarette butts on our roads and beaches. Throw garbage out of their car windows. Leave trash on the beach rather than walking 10 feet to deposit it in the massive waste barrel easily found every 30 feet.

Also, on a more political point, many of these people have money...a lot of money and use this wealth to try and privatize beaches which, obviously, excludes locals. It is a constant battle and draw on our local monetary resources as townships and Bennys are locked in conflict in court annually. Some have managed to privatize, but then still expect the state to pay for beach replenishment with local tax dollars. (And don't even get me started on the abuse of eminent domain...truly criminal)

Alas, there are some pleasures to be found in their presences. First off, most of them cannot swim. We derive a sadistic satisfaction in watching the waves drag them along and under over and over again. Second, they do not understand how the tides work. We will go to the beach and set up at the exact spot that the tide will rise to at its highest during the course of our stay. They, seeing that there is so much real-estate between us and the waters edge and not being able to control that "me first" instinct, will set up right up front against the waves. We cannot properly express the joy the fills our hearts as the tide comes in to drag away and thoroughly soak all their belongings. To watch them scurry like ants, pulling their drenched overload of crap to plots now BEHIND US! Ha, ha, ha, ha...

So, it is with pure ecstasy that we welcome Labor Day! It is not at all then end of summer. Technically, summer is not over until Sept 21 and the beach is still beautiful for that time. For us, the best time of summer has just begun!

Have A Very Happy Labor Day...we will!

i have learned something new today. never having lived in any sort of "destination" area, i have no frame of reference. but i think we all can agree that new yorkers are rude. and you know something else - i think they're proud of it.
i hate hate HATE litterers. nothing bugs me more...and littering on a beach is a sacrilege.
For about 3 years I had NY plates on my car because Jeff still had a NY license and we registered our cars to his mom’s house in Syracuse NY because he did not want to put up with the hassle of switching to a NJ license. I was SCREAMED at constantly for being a "benny"... obviously this was not true I have lived at the shore my entire life, but it was enough for me to force Jeff to transfer his license and our registrations to NJ. I dreaded driving around in the summer because I knew what my fellow “locals” were thinking when they saw my plates.
Love the picture of the bennies… typical look: Brooklyn fade, wife beater, a really bad fake bake and eyebrows that no man was born with;) “How you doin?”
Bah,Bah,Bah,Benny & the Jets..ssssss
enjoy the mass exodus,Jess, and have a great long weekend!
Benny & the Jess!
i have never in my life heard of a benny. i love learning something everyday. i hope your weekend is smooth and you don't run into too many benny's. i miss you guys hope to see you soon.
hugs and kisses.
i have only lived at the shore for one year but i agree with jess 100%. go home already.
this is precisely the reason that we will not be spending our labor day on our home beaches. they will be overflowing this weekend with these people and also precisely why we WILL be spending next week on our home beaches (i have convinced ryan to take a few MUCH NEEDED days off and "vacation" with wil & i) enjoying the surf, sand, waves...and peace and quiet.
Tia- If you, coming from Penn, came to the shore, you'd be called a "Shoobie". That term is used primarily in Southern NJ as that is the more logical Philly and surrounding area, Penn tourist destination. You can look Shoobie up on the net. I know, I'm wealth of useless information.
Have a great weekend! Lots of love!
I actually have talked to the kid of webmasters bennysgohome.com...and I bought a very funny t shirt from him which I'm giving to Robert...... If anyone is interested, he's got a kiosk in the Convention Center at Asbury Park. His merchandise is hilarious.
BTW - The issue of gentrifying Asbury Park is a big one with me. I am all for refurbishing an area so much a part of my, and the state's history.....But, I want it done with NEW JERSEY money! Jessica's piece about NY's coming and wanting to privatize is such a salient point. Everything that makes the Jersey Shore distinctive will be swallowed once a bunch of obnoxious yuppies invade the area, pay up the nose for expensive condos and houses, and make Asbury Park into West Village, NY WEST.... Go into a merchant in downtown Asbury........ALLLLL transplants, many from NYC....... This is why I wanted Robert and Jess to buy a house IN Asbury as opposed to outside....... they'd have gotten more house for the money and prevented one arrogant prig from the city getting their greedy talons on our real estate....
NEW JERSEYIANS UNITE! BUY IN ASBURY!!!!
I would have bought in Asbury in a milisecond...if I didn't have to send my children to their schools. Officially worst in NJ...worse than Camden, if you can believe that one.
the benny sounds obnoxious! i think that picture sums it up.
where's pop pop been?
those guys are dusche bags!
Bennys are, for the most part, low life Eyetalians from Staten Island.
The mayor of Belmar was right!!
Yours truly,
Pop Pop (who is part Eyetye and part Irish!).
Note to Quatro Molinas:
Benny Pop Pop has been away at Saratoga, betting on horses, having fine dinners, and enjoying the magificence of the lower Adironacks, the most underrated and under-appreciated area in the northeast.
Thanks for asking.
Pop Pop
How did you ever find a way to do electronic age progression on Ryan and Tristan? :)
God forbid! And over my dead body.
WELLLLL>>>> Ryan DOES seem to wear that blue Italia shirt, much like the gavone with the white hat in the picture, an awwwwwfullll lot!!!! I think you should resign yourself to a red camarro in the driveway. You also better bone up on your Sunday gravy :)
