Buyer beware! Compact fluorescent lighting is not only ugly, but it can also be dangerous. Yes, they last longer than the tradition incandescent bulbs and in that way are better for the environment, however, there are a list of negatives.
They operate buy heating and, thus, exciting (ionizing) mercury. If the bulb breaks before the end of it's full life, mercury poisoning could result (extremely serious, dangerous and potentially fatal). Also, as more and more people use them in an effort to do the right thing, they will, inevitably, end up in landfills...more mercury seeping into the ground and almost certainly into our water sources. Many states have disposal laws in place for this type of bulb in which it cannot go out with your regular kitchen waste, but how many of us know that and not all states have the law.
Also, strangely enough, the frequency of light can cause eye strain, headaches, and fatigue. They are also listed as being a serious health and safety issue for those with epilepsy, lupus, chronic fatigue, and vertigo by bringing on episodes.
Okay, and they are ugly and the light they emit is greenish making all under its cast look sick and pale. Sidebar, but another negative in my book.
I'm not saying don't buy them, just that these potential dangers are not being made well known by the manufacturers...for obvious reasons. If you decide to purchase them, just be careful with both their use and disposal.
That concludes today's public health and safety announcement. Enjoy your day!
